The Derek Mitchell Group was founded by Derek Mitchell in 1976, trading as a single electrician in the Auchencairn & Castle Douglas area. The roots of the company’s work were initially in agricultural installations and Derek soon found his workload increasing, so he employed another electrician to assist him.

20 years later, Derek’s son Paul joined the business to assist his father. The business grew quickly with Paul at Derek’s side and the area covered by the company expanded across the whole of Dumfries & Galloway, with the odd job out with the region.

In 2000, with Paul showing an enthusiasm for the business, Derek decided to move on to new business interests, leaving Paul to run the electrical business himself (Derek still keeping a very close eye from the sideline!)

Paul continued to develop Derek Mitchell Group, and in 2006 the company was working with 15 employees on the tools and 3 office staff. At this point Paul needed to employ a manager to enable the business to move forward keeping up with customers’ needs and maintain the high standard of workmanship. This position was filled and the company continued to grow at an ever-increasing pace.

From two men and a van, to a base of 60 staff

Although the company started working on farms and local domestic jobs, we have evolved in the past 15 years to cover all aspects of the trade. We chiefly work in agricultural, industrial and commercial premises, we also have a team of four that continually work in the domestic market: private and public housing (rewiring and new installations). Additionally, we have a team of two dedicated to breakdowns and maintenance repairs.

DM Group has continually expanded over the years to reflect market growth. The company now has two bases in Dumfries and Galloway. The first in the recently refurbished Unit 1 in Station Yard, Castle Douglas, which was designed internally and externally by Paul Mitchell. The unit has a mezzanine floor for further storage and is decked out with racking and shelving to supply the many types of equipment used to service the ever expanding and developing market.

The office boasts a main reception and waiting facilities for all customers wishing to make a personal visit. We continue to strive and provide a first class service to all our customers, no matter the size of the job – from a plug top fuse to a completely new factory installation.

Our growing business

In 2017 a new purpose-built head office, store and workshop was constructed at Heathhall Industrial Estate in Dumfries to supplement the office and workshop at Castle Douglas, as we had out grown the building. Both premises operate together, allowing Derek Mitchell Group to be better placed to serve all our valued customers.

Early 2019 saw another large step for the business, when we added the plumbing, mechanical and servicing department to the business, complementing the electrical division and allowing us to offer a full M&E solution for our customers.

The Castle Douglas office was repositioned in Station Yard Castle Douglas in January 2020 to provide better facilities for the Stewartry based team.

For the last 10 years Derek Mitchell has continued to grow from strength to strength, serving customers all across the Dumfries & Galloway region. We have travelled to central Scotland and even as far as Dublin. The business now employs around 60 members of staff and continues to grow whilst still maintaining the high standards of workmanship instilled into the business from day one.
